Also, I don't need to validate my singing - faults or good points - or ego by posting it on YouTube. I know what I am vocally capable of, but I also know my limitations, something, clearly, some of these students either don't know or they have been brainwashed. It is a real shame b/c I think there could be real talent there but it's clearly not being nurtured in this production.
Again, if you can't take the criticism, don't post on YouTube - or audition in the real world for that matter.

Hon, I do not claim to be some awesome opera singer, just a student of voice and music who has good points and bad points like everyone else. I feel like all singers are works in progress and that we all have something to learn. That being said, when inexperienced singers are placed in situations where they have no hope of succeeding - i.e., full production of Boheme - then where is the learning happening? If this CMU is a university, then how can this be called a positive learning experience?
-
So, I understand "RealOperaMan's" lashing out at me b/c he is obviously feeling insecure, if he is the director of this production, of his shoddy direction, and if he is the voice teacher, of his total lack of understanding how to teach young singers to sing with RESONANCE rather than simply shouting. That would lead me to believe RealOperaMan himself shouts rather than sings. I hear that works out great on America's Got Talent, but not on the main stage.

Ah, now it's clear that "TheRealOperaMan" MUST be the director or voice teacher of this production/students. Firstly, these kids SHOULDN'T have been singing a full Puccini opera, period. Secondly, none of these kids have large instruments, as evidenced in this video clip. Thirdly, Marcello is not, at this point, capable of the roles of Giovanni or Germont, which is what a kavalierbariton would sing.
-
The novice who writes of shouting is apparently unaware that singing over a Puccini orchestra requires a large instrument. This Marcello sounds like a young Kavalier bariton. The writer should go back to singing Tallis or Palestrina and leave Puccini to the properly trained.
-
Shouting does not equal operatic singing. Someone needs to tell Marcello that.
Finally, RealOperaMan must be no real musician at all because if he assumes properly trained singers sing Puccini and UNproperly trained singers sing Palestrina and Tallis, he is sadly ignorant of music preClassical period and singing that does not require rupturing a vocal chord. There's this thing called "nuance" and "musicality" he might want to look up in the New Grove.
