My 5 metre pacific proa sailing with its new chinese junk rig. The initial tests of the rig are very promising, with the ability to keep pace with most sailboats upwind and outperform them downwind.

The proa is my own design, I built it two years ago and originally had a mast-aft jib rig, which had excellent performance upwind but very poor offwind. The mast-aft was also difficult to erect, diffcult to shunt and impossible to reef, not to mention that it was more than ten times the cost of the junk rig.

The video is filmed at lake Pupuke, Auckland, New Zealand.

  • This is inspirational, I also wish to homebuild a prao, and if I can make it look even remotely as beatiful and functional as yours I would be more than delighted!

  • well done, design and sailing, also no music only birds and winds, great.

  • Interesting, that looks like less complication than the traditional sails most proas use.
