Thousands flee raging Athens fires - Aug 23 09

About 10,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes in a suburb of Greek capital Athens as more than 70 wildfires continue to spread.

A state of emergency has been declared in greater Athens while France and Italy are sending in aircraft to help crews battle the flames.
The fires are now very close to the historic suburb of Marathon, just northeast of the capital, and they are also threatening Pendeli, another suburb with a panoramic view of Athens.
