I rcently redesigned my fire box bagwall arrangement and reduced the size of burner ports. Bad idea!!!
I single fire so need to go up slow and clean in the beginning. Didn't happen.
At first I was excited about cutting firing time; but when I opened I found serious bloating and blackcore. Lost everything (35 cu ft kiln) except re-fire stuff that had burned clean early on in a previous kiln. Got out my SAWZALL with diamond blade and opened up those burner ports Boy that hurts!!

I wondered about the shelves but was more uneasy about the posts?
The most of the big kilns I've seen packed do seem to have enormously thich posts (compared to 1" or 1/12" I use in oxidation) about 4" dia, and 2" ( I use 5/8" because I only fire to about 2300% F ) shelves guess I thought these were made of that newer light refractory stuff! Very sad, with all the broken stuff (shelves) will they be recycled
some how?

fun thing to do, if you ever feel like decorating a wall. Smash the one's you can't use into pieces, and decorate the wall with it! Like a mozaik.

Hmmm - that 'little group' of mugs might make an awesome pedestal top fountain. A hole drilled in the bottom bottom of the cup with a ceramic drill bit for the location of a small pump and there you go. Fun for a table top or outside on a cement pedestal. Kind of making lemonade from lemons!

What a shame, still these things do happen and I guess Seth won't be buying those shelves again.

Commiserations. :( I know that sinking feeling well, but it must be really tough with a kiln that size. Better luck next time!

I would just want to SCREAM :`O and cry! :=(
Blood Sweat and Tears!
I once heard or read somewhere that the reason Japanese pottery was so expensive was because the mortality rate of pots was so high as much as 80% is that true? Was hoping
that it was only the front shelves Simon, this is really tough learning!
Hope you have a better weekend!

Hi DR - I have heard similar ! but 80% seems rather high to me .This kiln was a disaster that could have avoided by simply using the right shelves for the job .They were not suitable for stoneware temp ,pure & simple . The results we see .. mmmmh! (yes it was the whole front side only ) SL
