The audio track was taken from Screen Archive's fantastic new two-CD set. If you're an Andre Previn fan, be sure to pick one up - the sound is amazing, and it's a limited edition of only 3,000 copies:

I especially love the absurdity of this sequence. The beginning is staged as though they're doing a live television broadcast, with Daisy frantically running from set to set, having makeup and costume adjusted, etc. (What exactly is that guy with the makeup pad doing, anyway?) Of course, on an actual film set each scene would be shot individually, with multiple takes. Why they felt the need to give this completely wrong impression of how a film is shot is beyond me. They do drop it after the first few scenes, however.

From Natalie:

"There was also a scene where they left just half a song in and I found that very painful. I'd like to do a musical again, but I want an absolute guarantee that the songs, sung by me, stay in the picture."

This clip matched up perfectly, and needed only one cut (there's a long instrumental section that was not used in the film).

I actually ordered the CD to this film after watching these clips of yours. Haven't seen the movie in ages, but Andre Previn's music is excellent. Thanks for posting. Can't wait to see what you do next .

You are right that Daisy is supposed to have a strong impressive voice but i think for this song, (not You're Gonna Hear From Me), with the proper coaching and perhaps a bit more than a "little tweaking" (I concede) on my wording, she could have carried this song.

I don't undertsand why they kept placing this girl in musicals when her voice was adequate at best. Her vocals here are better than they usually were but she still couldn't uphold a musical if her life depended on it. Plus I won't even get into her acting. If you haven't guessed, I'm not a big Natalie wood fan. She just seems to miscast.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...weren't these tracks used to guide the person doing the dubbing? At this point she'd already been dubbed elsewhere, so wasn't it expected up front? I often feel that these are just "guide" tracks not meant for the public....or....did poor ole Nat think, "this time...this time i'll make it?" hmmm.

  • Based upon how perfectly they fit in, I'd say they were used for filming. Also, why would Jackie appear on Natalie's guide track unless this was an attempt to make a track that could be used?

Thought her three numbers in Gypsy were well sung, but for different reasons for each song. "Little Lamb": Most personal of Natalie's songs, necessarily performed in a small, quiet voice. Let Me Entertain You: Tearful cracks in vocals underscored her character's vulnerbility and "If Mamma Were Married": Similar in shout-out style like this. As for this song, in my opinion, woefully melodically deficient. She shouldn't be blamed for that.

  • If she had been coached more, she MIGHT have been able to pull this one off!

  • @lostvocals3 Natalie should have received an Oscar nom for "Gypsy." She was the best thing in the film; very touching. And Judy should have played Rose instead of Roz.

  • it sure is....

  • Thank you so much for all the great videos and hard work you put into bringing them to us.

  • I can see that Dory Previn's lyrics here were dealing with the fakeness of the showbiz world and yet still admiring it.

  • i like her voice in this scene better!

  • They possibly could have let Natalie sing the intro here (as she did in the slow screen test version of "You're Gonna Hear from Me") and then had studio vocalist Jackie Ward take over from there. There are bits and pieces of Nat's rendition that are passable but for the most part, at least in this take, most of what she did was unusable. It's nice though that thanks to you, Mark, fans can hear what her efforts sounded like.

  • Sadly,no one would ever allow her to sing onscreen or onstage. If I had met her..when she was still with us.I would have told her..I wish that they did allow you to sing Ms.Wood..your voice is lovely and it needs to be hear.

  • natalie just always sounds like she's shouting when she sings. i can see why they dubbed her.

  • Some of this is OK, while other parts are strained, and uncomfortable to listen to.

Not only is this staged unrealistically (as if Natalie had to run from set to set continuously), but it also does not resemble an actual 1930s Hollywood musical number at all - which is when it's supposed to be taking place. It's pure 1960s, which is when it was actually filmed.
