As for it being a 'live cover', that means 'live stallion, not artificial insemination'. Some breed registries require live cover if a foal is to be registered. Thoroughbred race horses MUST result from a live cover breeding, no AI permitted. This is one reason the owners of Barbaro tried to save him. He'd have been very valuable as a breeding stallion. But he could not mount a mare with his injured leg, and with AI disallowed, he could not sire a registerable foal.

Silly. The mare has a foal at her side. Mares come into heat about a week after the foal is born, and every 3 weeks throughout the spring/summer. The foal from last year would not be weaned yet, of course. And the mare would be distressed if the foal were out of her sight, so less receptive of the stallion.
