call 3342020191Only a few moments following Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) National President Joseph Lowery's farewell speech, a board member took the podium and introduced a motion to approve Lowery's continuation as the civil rights organization's national president.
The surprise motion, followed by a second, said that Lowery would continue as president for at least "a minimum of 90 days--but no longer than (SCLC Founding President) Martin Luther King, Jr.'s (Jan. 15, 1998) birthday." The board said it needed more time to find Lowery's successor.
