Students from IT-Product Design meet a couple of afternoons to see if it was possible to make saving fun. The video show you the concept coming out of this work.
The product concept that we developed (The Shopping Advisor) is a mobile phone based thing. It helps you make a log of all your shoppings. You scan the receipt with the mobile phone camera and then using optical character recognition software (OCR) we analyses the receipt and stores the amount in a database.
The whole point is to save money. To encourage you, the database information is used by a Facebook application that ranks your savings and you can compete with your friends.
The database information is combined with GPS information (or it could be the mobile phone network tracking system). We combine this information with Geo-data of the Groceries Store, the Shoes Shop etc. (using i.e Google Maps). So The Shopping Adviser knows that the money you just spent, was in the Shoes Shop - and with a teasing voice The Shopping Adviser would go; oh noo - not shoes again...
