Pegasus - a C-121 Navy Super Constellation Aircraft - met its fate on the Ross Ice Shelf in 1970 while attempting to land in zero visibility. This downed aircraft remains today, giving name to the Blue Ice Runway of the USAP.
I was aboard the plane, also I towed the Pegasus to it's resting place a few days later when the white out was over, with a D-8 cat. The pilots in VX-6 were great, We only had 5 injuries with a fully loaded plane with WinFly personnel and cargo. I remember the fire truck at Willys Field was as tall as the plane. We had ropes drawn from the plane and fire truck. You could not see your hand in front, Thanks for the memories. EO-3 Murray 1970 to 1972 Winfly summer support Navy SeaBes
Thanks for posting this, I went inside that airplane back in 1985. I still remember the gapping hole in the cockpit where the nose gear was torn away. Looks like its mostly covered with snow now.
