Ahb only have one legal parent. Son of a father, or son of a mother. It's why Lafiel was surprised Jinto had both a father and a mother. Legally Lafiel has no mother. (Jinto thinks of Lafiel's female genetic provider as "mother"- and in fact Lafiel is a bit odd in that her genetic mother was a part of her life.)

Usually the legal parent will have a lover who they ask to provide the genetic data for the creation of their child- but apparently committed relationships are rare among the Ahb.
