This short film pays tribute to those British politicians who have faced the tough job of leading a political party in opposition. Starting after World War Two, it features Labour leaders from Clement Attlee to Tony Blair, Conservatives from Churchill to Cameron, plus Liberals, SDP and Liberal Democrat leaders from Jo Grimond to Nick Clegg. These men - and two women - had mixed fortunes at the hands of the electorate (and their own parties), but whether they achieved power or not, the job they did was vital to our democracy. We salute them.

  • You appear to have missed Roy Jenkins (SDP 1982-83) and Robert Maclennan (SDP & SLDP 1987-88) However, a good collection of forgotten faces.

  • What ever happened to Ian Duncan Smith?
