@vespahistory At yet now Canada, in the province of Quebec, has institutionalized segregation. And they use the same system of discrimination that South Africa under apartheid used: the parent/child relationship. See chapters 2 and 5 at whycanadamustend dawt cawm
@katievhoneychurch Wishful thinking。You've just seen Gladwell talk at length on the great divide between lighter-skined Blacks and Blacks in Jamaica and how the former did NOT consider themselves part of the latter。Why would you assume that Gladwell's slaveholding anscestors were somehow more altruistic than the Whites of the time? Certainly, we'd like that to be the case, and, certainly, there were instances in which free Blacks in the U.S. bought relatives out of slavery. But can't assume it
Okay, I've now seen all 5 parts of the Gladwell section of "Faces of America" and unless there's a sixth part, I can inform readers that the uploader of these excerpts (whom by their name I assume to be the producers of the series) have white-washed their selections in the most politically correct way. In the original broadcast, Gates confronts Gladwell with the results of his research that Gladwell's "Brown" Jamaican ancestors weren't slaves but slaveHOLDERS. That's right, they OWNED Blacks.
@HBHeroes So you wasted those precious hours of mastery. Dumb ass. You've just lost some IQ! The lesson from him is to not spend so much time fucking around by what you see but rather what you would like to specialize in.
gladwells black ancestor who bought another slave was probably buying them out of slavery because they were related or known to them.,Some freed slaves would work 7-25 years to buy the freedom of their daughter, nieces etc.
I saw today a record of a "freed black" buying a quadroon [1/4 black person] and all her 3 babies probably to keep them from all being seperated and perhaps because she was related to them.Their owner/slave master had died and surely they all would have been sold.
@vespahistory It's actually like that in Canada and Caribbean countries,,,,the US has always been more obsessed with race.

This makes me so happy to be a member of the Mennonite church! God's Kingdom on earth is present here and now, as well as yet to come.

I'm a HUGE fan of both Gates and Gladwell. I've read and re-read and over again Tipping Point and Blink.
