You could not make a series like this, or write a book like this again, and certainly you will never see the likes again on PBS....why? Because most people today, especially those recent products of video games and 3D movies, will never have the patience to "feel" the tension of a real spy story written by Le Carre, and filmed by the BBC at its peak - in the 60's/

This is the version to watch. Sheer clas and quality end to end. Intelligently scripted too.

This is one of my favourite TV series of all time makes the Wire look not quite as good as everyone raves about. The film is also very good Gary is good Alec is good they both compliant each other. But my favourite is the BBC version it is great television. London in 1979 never looked so gloomy.

Alec Guinness was nowhere near the superb performance from Gary Oldman,

The film was exceptional, and (being in the permanent state of immense adoration for the BBC that I am) I'd really love to see this version.

@VindobonaNorikum2 - Smiley's People is really good. Guiness is extraordinary.

@TheIntruders , very true. I've just seen the new version with Gary Oldman. Well, not bad, not bad. But I prefer the BBC classic of 1979 too.

@MAGADIR, I tried to found the score. But alas. For your info: the closing credits music, an arrangement of Nunc dimittis ("Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace") from the Book of Common Prayer (1662), was composed by Geoffrey Burgon for organ, trumpet and treble; the score earned the Ivor Novello Award for 1979.
