See Microsoft strenuously argue against California AB 1668, a bill that would mandate open formats for state government. This hearing took place before the Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy on April 17, 2007. Geesh! The FUD and the spin.

Every pro-Microsoft speaker here is a flat-out liar with deliberately misleading statements. Microsoft's format is NOT open. It is controlled through elaborate licensing restrictions which allow Microsoft to retain control of the formats, which in turn locks people into their software. Other companies are certainly self-interested, but only in removing Microsoft's monopoly on document formats and level the playing field.
