  • 911 dispatcher: 911 what is your emergency?

Caller: I work at the Red and Black Cafe and need help now!!!..

    911 dispatcher: What Cafe?

    Caller: Red and Black Cafe!!

    Caller: hello

    Caller: Hello!!

  • @unassumption Yes, essentially.

I think typically, the regulars (i.e. the racists in your example) would not want to give up 'their' place of hanging out so that the group of new people (the blacks) could stay. So there usually isn't a "loss of business" to worry about there. For instance, have you ever been in a restaurant in Mississippi? They make the blacks leave just by the vibe alone...

But with cops, you gotta make it official. The owner is using the law for his own protection, imo.

  • I support this dumbass' ability to refuse service to anyone but I also believe that the police should be able to refuse service to his cafe. I love how scared everybody looked and how spd they sounded making their statements on camera! I wonder who he will call if somebody with a gun ever comes to robb his cafe? If he calls the police does that make him some type of hypocrite

  • @Grimtheorist

so if your cafe was full of racists you could kick out all blacks, to protect your buisiness? I'm sure I would've seen people abusing that loophole if it existed!

  • @unassumption Well, based on the 1960's era Unruh Civil Rights act, you are correct. However, that same act, while stating specifically that you can't kick a police officer out solely based on his occupation, also states that in order to protect a legitimate business interest, you can in fact refuse service to anyone.

So, as he stated, he was protecting his other customers from feeling uncomfortable. The officer's presence would have driven customers away from the store, justifying the refusal.

  • @Ma007rk

Very honest answer. I don't really feel comfortable around them either to be honest. That's no reason to boot them, but i see where you're coming from 100% and if it was legal to kick them out (which it probbaly is even if it's not that logical for it to be) I would likely do the same if i was the owner and felt that way.

  • You have a good point. I suppose my dislike of Police Officers is coming through. I know that I don't want to see Police Officers around me if I'm eating or drinking at an establishment. I won't make excuses for the way I believe, I don't like them.

  • Now how do you know that this guy is a Christian? Why don't you submit something in Congress that will make it crime to be a Christian. That's what you want, isn't it?

  • @Ma007rk

Workplace safety, consumer protection, environmental regulations, civil rights, etc, all limit the freedom of owners to do what they want with their stores. It's just NOT the case that he can kick anyone he wants out. IMO that's a good thing. I can't see how you can defend laws stopping him throwing out jews or gays, and not oppose him tossing out cops. The "he can do what he wants with his property" argument would preclude OSHA or the FDA

  • @Grimtheorist

except that's not his legal right. You have no right to refuse service to blacks, gays, disabled people, people of any given religion, I don't think you can refuse people for their political beliefs... it's a pretty long list of what you can't throw out of your store legally. Why are you allowed to discriminate based on the job of the person? It seems as abitrary as on religious grounds (Which can be changed) or sexual orientation (which can be hidden).
