Opening theme of The Great Adventure' s "Go Down Moses" episode. air date November 1, 1963. The one hour historical anthology series aired on CBS Friday nights at 7:30pm eastern time.
It was bumped from the schedule on Nov.22,1963 because of news coverage of the assassination of JFK. Also, that day,Lee Harvey Oswald, suspected assassin, was found in a Texas movie theater where a film starring Van Heflin was showing.Van Heflin was a narrator of the TV series.
Another comment also names Russell Johnson as another narrator. This was a year before Johnson gained notoriety asThe Professor on "Gilligan's Island".
As a child this show got me so interested ih history. Wish we had shows for our kids like that now. Seems like the media wants to turn the kids into a bunch of queers today!
This was one of my favorite TV Programs when i was 13 years old, getting to learn United States History, looked forward to watching this program friday night from 7:30-8:30 PM from CBS,Channel 5,in Boston,Mass. It is a shame this work is being left to deteriorate in the CBS vaults! Actor,Russell Johnson was also a narrator on this series!
It's really too bad the History Channel can't get this from CBS and show it, at least occasionally. A lot of us boomers would love to see this quality show.
I wouldn't take what you were told about the condition of the tapes at face value. Years ago, a friend of mine went to the vaults where the 1225 episodes of Dark Shadows' 2 inch master tapes were stored. In the corner, in a pile of dust, one of the tapes had fallen off its shelf and became partially unspooled. My friend was told that it was damaged beyond repair and would be thrown out. He cleaned it up and rewound it onto its spool. It turned out to be the last episode. Entire series is on DVD!

This program is why I became a history major. It has given me a deep love for American history beyond the reader digest version we are fed at school.

This was one of the greatest TV Series ever...CBS is committing a crime by letting this show rot.
They balos do the same thing to Slattery's People, East Side/wEst Side. etc.
