The Bucharest Anglican church with its standard issue late Victorian Gothic style is quite a singular architectural presence in Bucharest, a city endowed with a rich Byzantine church architecture and a very incongruous mix of civilian architectural styles from French inspired, native Neo-Romanian, Art Deco, modernist and communist brutalist. The church was built in 1914-'20 and during the Cold War has been the sole Anglican functioning church behind the Iron Curtain.

  • Thank you for this video of the Bucharest Anglican church, Valentin. I am surprised that the building wasn't demolished during the communist era. Is that a statue of Queen Marie at the front?

    Regards,

    Nicholas

  • Thank you for your nice comment! The building and the land beneath it are British Crown property, since it was bequeathed by the people of Bucharest to the British Sovereign estate in early c20th and remained as such during communist times, thus avoiding interference from the Romanian state. The statue in front is a modern biblical theme bronze, the donation of local individuals.

  • Thank you for that. I used to live in Bucharest, and I remember the church fondly.
