I agree with your sentiment that a lot of people who would be helped by such information just don't have the first clue as to intently grow plants even much less automate a watering process. I was reading a good one about a water turbine that powers a pump to lift the water to where it runs into the irrigation system. I betcha it could all be done in bamboo.

I'm looking into this concept for my own garden. I'm trying to lay out my land to be as reasonably self sufficient as possible. In addition to food I plan to grow "industrial" crops like bamboo. That way I won't be dependent on outside suppliers. I might have to buy my first round of bamboo, but if I manage it right I should be able to harvest my own "pipes" to repair and expand the irrigation system.

I can see useing bamboo as a convayor of water from a rain water barrel. Is it cheaper than pvc pipes?

At Tiki shack importer dott com, they sell 25X 1 inch by 8 foot bamboo poles for about a hundred bucks. Just for sake of not damaging the environment with the PVC production the bamboo would be worth it. A similar amount of PVC costs about $60 at home depot. Presumably you wouldn't cut the PVC in half so it'd be about double or $120 to water the same area. The moving water under sunlight purification is a huge advantage to the bamboo system.
