What section of the newspaper is best?
-
I am a little concern about the ink on the newspaper since I am interested in growing organic wheatgrass.

@vineyardedge Would undyed cotton tea towels work for that? Maybe an organic cotton t-shirt- those aren't as hard to find.

Thank you so much. You've inspired me to start growing my own instead of paying the high price at the farmers market. I will check back in if I have any questions:)

LOOKS LIKE A CHIA PET !

CAN YOU SMOKE IT ?

nice garden!

@vineyardedge not necessarily, you can be "awake" to the fact that too much of anything is generally bad for you. The vegan raw food thing is huge in america because we love junk food here. but if we ate more like people in paris we wouldn't even be debating right now.

Culinary unbleached cheescloth would be a little bit better than the newspaper. I looked for organic unbleached cheesecloth, but that is hard to find.

@queenzlink247 People that are not vegans are the ones who are brainwashed.
how in the world does your grass grow so thick?? even if i spread it pretty thick my grass seems to get crowded and only grows every other grain. and it also "splits off" into two blades at only 3" high. i soak for 12 hours, sprout and rinse for 24 hours, spread on dry soil, water with garden hose fine spray, treat with food grade h peroxide solution of 1tsp to 32 oz between each watering, full sun for morning as my house shades it after that. what do i need to change? tips?

@benjorgensen1 Could be sprouting time? I sprout the wheat for however long it takes for it to start to form a root. This can be longer or shorter depending on weather and type of wheat used - no set time. Also if I let it sprout too long and the root starts to get too long before I put it on the soil - I find this reduces the productivity as well.
Could be overcrowding. I have found this reduces productivity.

Could also be too much sunlight. The wheat shoots best when it stays covered on top of the soil until the leaves are two or three centimetres long. Too much sunlight and heat during growth may be causing the splitting of the leaves as well. Sunlight and heat = summer for the plant - time to get on and produce seed. Less light = spring - plenty of time to grow foliage before trying to form seed. I keep my grass indoors most of the day, with maybe 1/2 an hour or an hour outdoors sometimes.

Ok, so you CAN lt it grow once more afte cuttingit!!! Thank you! Now, what do you do with it after the second harvest? Just throw away?
Can I put the grass in my smoothie? I don't have a juicer but was thnking about making a green smoothie instead. But everywhere I look, everbody is just juicing it?

@babythebabyslings After the second harvest I just compost it. The nutrient level will be pretty low in any further cuttings.
You can try putting the grass in your smoothie. Its pretty fibrous though and may not combine well with the other ingredients, thats why most people juice it.
