  • What you are doing to strike the spark is WRONG. You should keep the flint and steel together, very close to the tinder, and PULL AWAY the flint instead of push forward the steel/scraper/knife. Your way of doing this will knock down your carefully made tinder bundle.

  • For the Sparkie and the Blasmatch, the ferro rod inside is designed to be rotated for even wear. I see yours (the Sparkie especially) has a large flat spot on it from not rotating it. Also, with the magnesium bar, if you hold your sharp edge still and draw the magnesium bar back toward you, you wouldn't be chasing the cotton ball around.
