It's strange how Lynch says 'Ireland can not stand by' - what else could Ireland have done? The UK's military was (still is) vastly more powerful that the Irish Defence Forces. At the height of the cold war (when the UK's armed forces was at its peak) could Ireland really have tried to intervene? They would have been crushed and suffered massive retaliation from the UK. The Irish Goverment knew it and that's why they did not invade.
