actually if your far enough a way you will see the blast a few seconds before the shock wave hits you, and if your far enough away it might not even be enough to knock down the building your in, when your far enough away that the blast wave is survivable then you still have to worry about radiation burns. covering your face with paper can stop most of the initial radiation that would burn you.
