Norma: We are talking technology this morning and who better to do that with than with the "chic geek," Kate Linendoll. She is a RIT grad, which we are proud to say, and I know she is too. And you join us today to talk all about some of the coolest apps. Now Kate, I just got an iPhone. So I'm still learning.
Katie: Yay! I like that.
Norma: Yeah, yeah. I'm just just getting into the apps and all the different things that you can do. There's some really amazing ones out there. I wonder how I lived without them?
Katie: I know, and that's what everybody says too. And you're probably feeling overwhelmed because on the iPhone side alone there are over 500,000 apps. And I have to tell you, in the world of technology, probably the question I get asked most is "what are the top 5?" Like which ones should I absolutely have in my arsenal?
Norma: Yeah. Ok, so which of the ones, you've got some really cool ones that when I was reading about them I thought, "I gotta have that!"
Katie: Yeah totally. Let me just start right off in the medical realm. I think this is a really cool one. This is ZocDoc. And ZocDoc is an app made just for finding doctors in your area. Believe it or not, and we've all been there, it takes on average three weeks to find and book your doctor's appointment and especially as we head into winter, colds and flues, it can be nearly impossible to see the doctor.
Norma: Yeah.
Katie: Well using your smartphone's GPS, it will actually locate all the doctors within your area. You can search by specialty, you can search by insurance plan and you can see all the available appointments and book it right on the app - typically within 24 hours. A nice little feature, especially for moms as we head into winter.
Norma: Oh yes, we were just talking about germs and preventing colds and whatnot and well it's inevitable, you're going to need to see your doctor at some point this season. How about Wrdle? This is a new one. I was at, speaking of the doctor's, I was at the doctor's office yesterday in the waiting room and I entertained myself for a good 45 minutes (that's how long I was waiting) with my iPhone. I didn't even feel the time go by.
Katie: Omigosh, that's like, it's really funny that you say that because in my family, we're having a Wrdle competition and it's a little like Words with Friends, but you have a 2 minute time limit.
Norma: Oh yeah.
Katie: But I think in terms of sheer entertainment, that is one of my favorite apps. That's W-R-DLE, and it's kind of like a must have download. But another one I love in terms of like entertainment and entertaining yourself as we're speaking to is Myxer Social Radio App, and that's m-y-x-e-r. I like this one because anyone that has a Facebook account can actually log in to this and it's all about listening to the music that you love with your friends. And you can create custom listening rooms, you can send personalized messages and it doesn't matter if you love country, or jazz, or top 40. You pick what you like and you get to experience it with your friends and also chat with them and send them customized greetings. And there's more info on that on mxyer, m-y-x-e-r.fm.
Norma: Ok, what about kids? Kids are inevitably picking up the iPhone. They're playing with it. Are there any apps that are appropriate for them?
Katie: Yeah, there's quite a few on my kid-friendly list. And I was writing for Parents.com and I love to feature some of my top favorites. Just off the top of my head, you know Talking Tom is one of best ones. It's a cat. Anything that you say, the cat will actually speak out to. But one that kids are actually getting involved with with their parents over the holiday season is making Christmas cards, which I know sounds crazy. Instead of using like a Kodak or a Snapfish, what's really cool is that you can use this one called Postagram, and it creates. You just take any of the photos from your smartphone and you can create a physical postcard to actually send to somebody for 99 cents. And I think this is fun because kids get to get with the parents and you get to make a personalized message. And then you get something physical in the mail for like a buck. Kind of a nice little option. That's Postagram.
Norma: Hey, that's like the Instagram app. I've got the Instagram app. Is that the same thing? Related?
Katie: You know that's comparable, and you can actually kind of like update the photos to look Instagram-esqe. And what's cool about Postagram is though at the end of the day you get that physical postcard, and the postcard actually has a punch-out for the photo. So you can get rid of the postcard and actually just have the photo and put that on your fridge, which I think is really cool.
