It also seems that maybe what you've said about the forced confirmation could lead to a feeling of helplessness, which could manifest as a need for revenge against the citizens of Rapture.
The theme of control can be seen extensively throughout the level. (The statues and the Pianist spring to mind)

I see him more as a man whos art at one time thrilled the masses but as times changed he had to conform against his will to keep his spotlight and eventually slipping in to madness trying to express himself to the world in bizzare and often phycotic ways.
