Dr. Michael Hudson, strategic planning consultant, reveals a contrarian strategy to help you with your strategic planning for this year.

Everyone in the country seems to be chasing after Generation X and Generation Y because we seem them as the future members of our credit union. We see them as the people we've got to attract and get into our system in order to keep our credit unions growing.

While there are 90 million of these folks, there's something else going on in our population that's very important. By 2020 over 22% of western civilization is going to be over the age of 65. Many of these people are your founding members who have helped you build your credit union over time. So as you start thinking about the long term vision of your credit union and the objectives you want to achieve, take the contrarian strategy and consider it for a few minutes. What if instead of focusing all of your energy on attracting members who are part of Gen X and Gen Y and bringing in new young members, you look at how you can change your organization and the products and services you deliver that meet the needs of the aging population?

While you do need the youth market, you also need to think about this aging population and their unique and specific needs. Think about what your credit union can do to help people you already have a relationship with and turn them into contributing members for your future as they move into the next phase of their life.
