You can see it in his eyes: Pain, Sadness, Satisfaction, Forgiveness.
All these feelings can not be expressed by words, but body language and eye contact.
I think he forgave him in the end on what his mentor did to him.
And also I think that Mr.Rooney is tired of taking care of his son, he is glad that his "real" son released him from his failure as father.

"I'm glad it's you."

every father is a hero to his son. paul newman to tom hanks. tom hanks to his son. when paul says" i'm glad its you", it just kills me. a moving painting of " you reap what you sow"

Anyone else see a not-as-good doppleganger of this scene on the last episode of Boardwalk?

Part of this movie was filmed down the street from where I lived

2:14 the griefstricken look on Tom Hanks' face. It's gutwrenching. There's almost a father-son love between his and Paul Newman's character. All the more ironic, because John Rooney despises his own depraved son, and Michael Sullivan is doing this our of retribution for the deaths of his wife and younger son, and to try and save the life of his remaining child.

No sound. Just haunting music, gorgeous photography, and 2 Oscar winning actors. Yeah, that's pretty much all you need.

What a movie...a beast of a movie sooo underated. If you liked The Untouchables, Heat, Goodfellas, Casino, and Scarface, then watch this film. It's just too damn good folks!
