US Open 2009 Final / Juan Martin Del Potro vs Roger Federer

The 2009 US Open Final was an incredibly exciting match that went the distance. It's the first US Open Final to go 5 sets since Andre Agassi beat Todd Martin in 1999's final.

This match pitted Juan Martin Del Potro against 5-time defending champion Roger Federer. Del Potro started extremely slowly but found his range in the middle of the second set.

Once Del Potro got rolling, his powerful groundstrokes and mental toughness got him past Federer. This US Open Final was interesting for a number of reasons, which are explained in the video.

Expect Del Potro to win at least several more majors over the course of his career. Great talent.

What happened is that Fed played better in the first half (by luring Delpo to the net) and Delpo played better in the second (by forcing Roger into baseline rallies). For everyone blaming it on Fed's serve: Delpo's serve was very inconsistent as well. Neither guy had a great day serving, but on the big points (and towards the all-inportant tail end of the match), Delpo is the one who came through. Roger didn't give it to him. Delpo took it.
