The Government has launched a consultation today on its plans and programmes to meet EU air quality legal limits that were breached in 2005.
If ever there was a reminder of why these standards must be met by 2012 and why Mayor Livingstone must take ambitious, bold action to improve air quality urgently in London - this is it!
Mayor Livingstone estimates air pollution caused 1,031 premature deaths in London in 2005 (compared with 617 deaths from passive workplace smoking across the WHOLE UK).
London's ambitions for the 2012 Olympics may be being downgraded from the "greenest Games" to just "a green Games" to avoid, in part, having to meet sustainably World Health Organisation recommended standards of air quality throughout London by that date.
