Daft Punk's Alive 2007 set recreated with Ableton Live at home, done live.
Pt. 2: Technologic, Touch it, Robot Rock

HOW IS IT DONE?

Daft Punk uses Ableton Live as the center of the Alive show. I started playing with the program about a year ago. For fun, I thought it would be a challenge to try and recreate the section with Technologic mixed with Voyager, and I was amazed how simple it was -- just a looped portion of Voyager over a more or less straight rendition of Technologic, with beat repeat and added percussion. I created more and more of it, doing the Robot Rock part that segues into Technologic, until I got all the way to One More Time.

The incredible thing about it is that 90% of it is done with tracks off of Daft Punk CDs you can buy anywhere. The manipulation is done with Ableton - autopans, EQs, beat repeats, filters, all sort of effects are used to distort the CD versions. I had to find some acapellas and be clever about certain things (for example, the "Fuck it" segment) , but most of it is quite straight forward. I've learned that with Daft Punk, if something sounds complicated, it's probably not -- it's just a clever rehashing of something else. For example, the twangy sound after the "Fuck it" segment with the "Touch it bring it pay it" sample is the first bar of Television Rules The Nation put through an enveloped Auto Filter and an Auto pan. That simple. This took a lot of trial and error to figure out.

I suspect that the reason it doesn't sound exactly like the actual set in all cases is that some of it is being done with the Moogs. I don't have access to those, but I imagine they add lots of filtering possibilities and of course for the parts with actual synthesis, that analog sound is hard to beat (I just used the sampler in Ableton.)

  • how do you get it to repeat sounds like at 12 seconds?

  • That is an Ableton plugin called Beat Repeat

  • Daft does indeed use ableton live, and moogs for some filters and synthesis.

  • While I am amazed at how close this sounds to the original, and while you are probably right about filtering the cds to get the individual tracks, I like to think that daft punk would have the original multi-track versions of their songs. Seeing how close this sounds, though, they probably did what you did.

  • that is very impressive.

  • pt 3 please :D(television rules the natioooooon!)

  • hey dude.. what effect did you use in the robot rock loop... at 00:48???

  • Dude, how did you do 2:33? (the drums pitching down) Sounds exactly like they did!

  • AMAZING!

  • yea so i actual remade all of it too, but for da sample i took parts of robot rock, then put it through a auto filter, then turned on the LFO all the way up,And pashe 360, and changed the fq to NOTES and i think 1/3 wiit a sin evelop,

  • FUCK IT 0:35 xD

  • It's just the 'F' from 'Fill it' with the 'ock it' from 'Lock it' on technologic. It might have a weird "fluck it" sound to it, but that can be easily covered by other sound.
