Anyone watching this video should use proper tools while attempting to make a fire piston. I took a few dangerous risks while making this video, but that doesn't mean you should. Please refrain from posting comments if you are going to tell me to get more tools, or use proper safety gear. I am aware of the risks I take and it is my decision to take those risks.

I will show you how to make a fire piston.
Sizes for Rod and Tube Are:
At Home Depot - Round Rod Aluminum 3/8 X 36 for $5.97. Round Tube Aluminum 1/2 X 1/16 X 36 for $10.67. This is what was on the label for the rod and tube. I'm assuming these measurements are in inches.

Use whatever tools you have that will work. If you have better tools, like a lathe, or a better method, then go ahead and do that. I just used the tools that I have and made it work.

  • cool video. one way to get the plug to fit is to put it in the freezer and then put the tube in the oven. and assemble them. the heat causes the tune to expand while the cold causes the plug to shrink. using this method you can actually put a plug into a tube that is a few thousands too small.

  • @johnis4jesus Thanks for the advice! I'll have to try that method next time I make a fire piston.

  • Great how to video!!! Good step by step on this!! I will have to try to make one like this! What size rod, tube and Oring did you use?

How much of a gap did you leave in the tube for the rod?

  • @crazywhitedog78

I honestly don't remember any of the sizes for the tubes or rings. I just found some that were similar in dimensions and eyeballed it. As far as the rings go, I made sure that it fit snug in the tube before I bought it.

  • Thanks good vid

  • You would have a bottle of Vaseline handy

  • Ok, what you can see here is I've stuck my rod into the battery powered hand drill.

Thank you so much for that :D

  • Hey just finished building my firepiston! Thanks for providing the dimensions!

  • I see you blow on the red tip, would it help if you lube up the knob as well ?.

  • Just be sure not to let newbs use your piston once you've made it. I had a buddy who let his friend try the one he had made, and the pipe snapped cuz the friend pushed it at a funky angle. lol!

  • HEY !! you making me nervous drilling at your hand. GET some tools. Saw, files, VICE. AND a Hammer.

  • To get an easy plug, warm your cylinder and put the plug in the freezer for a while, then press the plug in. When temperatures normalize, their tight fitted. This way you won't bulge your cylinder with hammering.

  • great video, excellent explanation

  • Thanks for this video mate it was just what i was looking for.
