W.B. Yeats said about his brooding poetic drama Purgatory, first produced at the Abbey in 1938, 'I have a one-act play in my head, a scene of tragic intensity... I am so afraid of that dream'. In Purgatory, with its harrowing story of an old man killing his son to end a cycle of violence and violation, Yeats suffuses his exploration of historical tradition and cultural identity with searing force and power.

Amateur dramatics? This is art! A great poet-playwright's greatest (and next-to-last) play, collapsing the supernatural, naturalism, family drama, and myth into two characters, eerie verse, and on a Noh-influenced single set/stage. Considering the dark intensities in so short a piece, the actors are exceptional. The black-and-white enhances it, as though it's almost an old-time teleplay. Beautiful!...

Thanks very much for your reply, Dean. I enjoyed watching the production and have used parts of it to good effect when discussing the play with students.
