At approximately 7 PM on June 5, Dr. Alan Berkman passed away, surrounded by family and friends. Alan was an AIDS warrior, a physician at the Mailman School of Public Health and activist who dedicated himself to fighting for health and social justice.
He will be remembered for many things--in particular the fact that he could not abide by the medical apartheid that condemned millions with HIV in developing countries to death because of lack of access to affordable medicines. This rejection of injustice caused him to found Health GAP. He was a mentor to countless organizers, activists and
health care providers, and a remarkable freedom fighter.
It is extremely difficult to imagine the global AIDS movement without Alan, as he has directly and indirectly shaped so many aspects of it.
At a future time, there will be a public memorial service to celebrate extraordinary Alan's life. In lieu of flowers, Alan had requested that donations by check be made payable to Health GAP, subject line "Alan Berkman Fund," and sent to:

Alan Berkman,
"Imprisoned for "keeping the good of the patient as the highest priority." Wow, how revolutionary... oh, that is The Hippocratic Oath. Uh... how... traditional.
We so miss you, Alan...
