ENTERPRISE LANDING TEST

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle orbiter. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform test flights in the atmosphere. It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield, and was therefore not capable of spaceflight.

Originally, Enterprise had been intended to be refitted for orbital flight, which would have made it the second space shuttle to fly after Columbia. However, during the construction of Columbia, details of the final design changed, particularly with regard to the weight of the fuselage and wings. Refitting Enterprise for flight would have involved dismantling the orbiter and returning the sections to subcontractors across the country. As this was an expensive proposition, it was determined to be less costly to build Challenger around a body frame (STA-099) that had been created as a test article. Similarly, Enterprise was considered for refit to replace Challenger after the latter was destroyed, but Endeavour was built from structural spares instead.

NASA's Space Shuttle, officially named the Space Transportation System (STS), is the spacecraft currently used by the United States government for its human spaceflight missions and is scheduled to be retired from service in 2010. At launch, it consists of a rust-colored external tank (ET), two white, slender Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), and the orbiter, which is a winged spaceplane in the narrowest sense.

The orbiter carries astronauts and payload such as satellites or space station parts into low earth orbit, into the Earth's upper atmosphere or thermosphere. Usually, five to seven crew members ride in the orbiter. The payload capacity is 22,700 kilograms (50,000 lb). When the orbiter's mission is complete it fires its Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) thrusters to drop out of orbit and re-enters the lower atmosphere. During the descent, the shuttle orbiter decelerates from hypersonic speed primarily by aerobraking and then for the landing phase it acts as a glider, making a completely unpowered (deadstick) landing.

Two solid rocket boosters (SRBs) each provide 12.5 million newtons (2.8 million lbf) of thrust at liftoff, which is 83% of the total thrust needed for liftoff. The SRBs are jettisoned two minutes after launch at a height of about 45.7 kilometers (150,000 ft), and then deploy parachutes and land in the ocean to be recovered.[3] The SRB cases are made of steel about 1.3 centimeters (0.51 in) thick.

  • it is shame, such a beautifull piece of flying machine, i'm crying because it is not used anymore, god speed columbia challenger discovery atlantis and endeavour, you will be missed

  • She may have been described as a flying brick however she is/was the most beautiful spaceship mankind has ever sent into space.

Dear NASA and congress. Damn you all for cutting corners and going with capsules. capsules may be the smart move with what the economy has had to endure the last 11 years, but not a bold move. Bold moves make history. Smart moves, play it safe moves stay at home and bolt their door fearing everything. capsules are not our future.

  • @Jasun1974 well the accidents could have been prevented. Challenger was adviced not to lift that day due to could weather, which caused the o-ring not to function, leaking in hot gases that eventually caused the explosion. Columbia was a victim of falling debris during the liftoff, this can not happen on a capsule rocket since falling debris can't hit the actual plan of the astronauts.

  • @xXDEICIDE216Xx lever of perfection? Challenger and Columbia were a tragedy. The Space Shuttles were never used for what they sought to be. However, they were not as safe as people believe. Rocket Capsules are safer

  • @KellicTiger actually the rockey capsuls are more safe, since they are attacked at the top, therfore they don't risk being hit by debris, second they can eject from the rocket itself it there is a failure, meaning they have a motor at the top allowing it to escape with the astronauts safe. I agree they look really well, but they were to costly and not safe enough. THat can be said about CHallenger and Columbia, which both crashed

  • Cool, but I say we demand a presidential ruling that musicak be abilished from ALL pilot videos on yt.

  • @fowzie777 Have a fuckin GOOD day, and try not to stress urself too much with the fairytales of yours.

  • @fowzie777 For the last 4oo years since Galelio and Darwin, science have been ridiculed by whackers like you who couldnt let it go. Well I got news for you fucko, not this time. It is high time you whackers SHOULD listen and open your eyes instead of believing everything on a pice of book. It is high time to stop kidding urself u piece of cunt!!!

  • @fowzie777 So why is it possible God have told Moses the earth is flat?? No he didnt because the Book of Crap was written by ancient men who didnt understand anything. Now, you wake up and STOP hassling todays generations. This is the 21st century, GET OVER IT!!!!!!

  • @fowzie777 Why yes, I do believe Black Holes cos it has been documented. Now, seeing that you're one of those typical wankers beliving about the book of crap, do you know or HAVE you ever read it thoroughly?? I reckon you didnt otherwise you would have picked up that accordingly to the book of crap Earth ais supposedly flat as pancake, in the centre of universe and so and so. The first 5 chapters were written by Moses, And where did he get that from? From God. So there you have it.

  • @dj17q - how about you use words you want to use and leave others to use their own? what does the 21st century got to do with anything? God exists...period. you believe that there is dark matter? ever seen it? you believe there are black holes? ever seen one? young people today have been indoctrinated to accept what they are told in school without questioning anything....like the lie of evolution...so full of holes its the biggest joke going...but you believe it...wake up and ask some questions
