A brillianit piece of Chaplin's genius. A ballet of supreme vanity comes to an explosive end,
What hubris, what nemesis. .. and a total visual statement universally understood.

he was trying to promote values that were at odds with what a lot of people thought at the time...

I read his autobiography a few years ago, and I seem to recall he actually DID speak at a workers or communist rally, once, thougth I may be mis-remembering. at the time, chaplain understood the fascist threat more than most. but he underestimated the communist threat, it seems.

he didn't go into exile deliberately-the US took away his visa when he was abroad on a trip. In the film about Chaplain by Attenborough, there is an exchange, something like "But the US is a good country, deep down" - and the reply is "No, it's a good country on the surface." Chaplain was both an artistic, cultural, and commercial phenomenon. His films all promoted empathy and understanding. The US repaid him by throwing him out. Similar to what was done to Michael Jackson...

I highly doubt that. Think about it. This film came out in 1940. Hitler was around until 1945. Do you really think the Nazis let Charlie Chaplin and his crew go into Hitler's office and make a film which mocks Hitler? While he was still alive!
