This video demonstrates the protections built into B747-400 VNAV. From level flight, with autothrottle and autopilot engaged, the pilot initiates a VNAV climb. The thrust mode is THR REF meaning the engines are advanced to climb power. The pitch axis is VNAV SPD, meaning the VNAV climb speed (250 KIAS) is maintained with the elevator. Once the aircraft is stablized in the climb, the pilot disconnects the autothrottle and brings the thrust levers to idle. The climb rate and airspeed decay due to the thrust deficiency. The airspeed decays to stickshaker, and the climb rate to zero, but the aircraft does NOT enter a descent. This is the type of VNAV climb protection that is required for a VNAV system intended to be operated at low altitude.
