James Kalm wends his way through Chelseas season opening to bring viewers a brief encounter with the collage works of Mario Naves. As one of New Yorks most influential art critics, Naves sees and contemplates more art than most of us can imagine. This encyclopedic knowledge no doubt gives an intuitive aspect to his work. These small pieces began as unsent postcards and eventually evolved into a series numbering nearly 200 works. The scale and worn surfaces recall the best works of fellow collagists Kurt Schwritters and Anne Ryan. Featuring an interview with Mario Naves.
Anne Ryan my favorite!

for me these small works exude a pure positive energy, which is easily absorbed due to the scale. Tiny works that invigorate and charm. Beautifully in touch with natural forces. Humbly briliant.

Interesting work. Love the scale. I wish he would have sent that first postcard to his friend though--but I'm into Mail Art.

Ingenuous. Boldly diminutive. I read them as paintings.
They could be 4x6 feet. Winslow Homer and Warhol referred to their studios as factories. They both worked as commercial artists in their formative years. Inspired? Yes, but most often it comes through the back door. The soul leaks out. Thank you James for another keeper. Best-

well said mr. kalm......'work' is what makes an artist, contrary to the current vogue of immaterial art by the likes of wade guyton and michael asher. discipline in the studio, working through ideas physically is the 'meat' of art. 200 is a good number, i notice he edited for the show...........:)

There are lots of courageous people here who do nothing but pay rent on studio space and still call themselves artists. Inspiration is overrated. Sometimes just the act of doing accidently leads to inspiration.

Beautiful! That scale is something else -- I love how in such a limited dimension the pieces, even through the YouTubes, just plain pop and come alive.
