Gerry Adams, MLA, MP (Irish: Gearóid Mac Ádhaimh; born 6 October 1948) is an Irish Republican politician and abstentionist Westminster Member of Parliament for Belfast West. He is the president of Sinn Féin, which is the largest political party in Northern Ireland and fourth largest party in the Republic of Ireland.

Adams is credited with having played an important role in helping to end the Troubles in Northern Ireland. His leadership and ability to communicate and negotiate with both paramilitary forces and also politicians such as John Hume and John Major was cited by some as a catalyst that brought about the Good Friday Agreement, however his involvement in the perpetuation of violence till this point has caused some to hypothesise that much was solved by Adams simply ceasing his military campaign.

From the late 1980s, Adams was an important figure in the Northern Ireland peace process, initially following contact by the then Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader John Hume and subsequently with the Irish and British governments and then other parties. In 2005, the IRA indicated that its armed campaign was over and that it is now exclusively committed to democratic politics. Under Adams, Sinn Féin changed its traditional policy of abstentionism towards Oireachtas Éireann, the parliament of the Republic of Ireland, in 1986 and later took seats in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Assembly. However, Sinn Féin retains a policy of abstentionism towards the Westminster Parliament although since 2002 receives allowances for staff and takes up offices in the House of Commons.

  • Godbrother10: You are saying Adams etc take an allowance from their uk parliamentary remuneration, and an 'industrial salary' whatever that is, from a job they do not do. (i.e. being a member of the UK parliament). That's called bludging isn't it? As for them investing it in their consituencies . . . how? In what? Where's the public record of the investment? Invested in what exactly, how much? They like Paisley and his lot are just bludgers ripping off the poor; catholic and unionist alike.

  • @corpbs1 If its a job he doesn't do well? then why are they re-elected - repsect their mandate. Look at the houses and living standards of most Sinn Fein MPs and MLAs if they're in it for the money!

You can write personally to them if you want to know where the money goes but in no way does it go into their pockets.

  • So if Sinn Fein do not take their seats in Parliament, do they take the salaries and allowances?

  • @corpbs1 They take an alowance which they then invest in their constituency as Sinn Fein ministers only draw the average industrial wage

  • I don't suppose anyone thought to mention the surname "McGonville" to Gerry?

If he wants to abstain from the UK parliament, why does he keep standing for it?

The IRA and it's royalist opponents were, are, thugs and terrorists responsible for muders, corruption, and crass violence. There never was, and never will be, justification for that. Adams was IRA. But he knows nothing? McGonville. McGonville.

  • @corpbs1 For Sinn Fein to take their seats in Westminster they'd have to sell out on their Republican beliefs. Sinn Fein provides full representation through the Sinn Fein offices in Westminster, and through their presence in every major decision making forum in Ireland and in Europe. The party's main long term goal is a complete contradiction to the oath so it'd be wrong for them to take it.

  • A fitting tribute would be a 21 gun salute with Gerry standing in range! Evil man!

  • The first IRA was grass-roots, and socialist, and pitted against the owners of the large estates, that derived from the time of British Imperialism, in the Republic, as well as the Prostant power-structure in Ulster. It disbanded, suddenly, and dissapeared, off the face of the earth, around '72, and was replaced by the ProvO IRA, established by two men. One was English. It was funded and armed by CIA, at times, according to S McBride, who should know. Draw your own conclusions from that.

  • So jerry you wern' nt in the Ira

  • @corpbs1 Its McConville You ignorant fucker !! and many people have asked Gerry that, But I assume from your ignorance of calling Jean McConville, McGonville , That you haven't bothered to research what your talking about! I only reply Because I have seen you comment on many Gerry videos so maybe your being paid to advance a smear !!

  • @corpbs1 long story cut short... the ira were at war with the british establishment, during this war although the british tried to say the ira were common criminals clearly they were not in every way they and their actions were not just crime, you may not agree with this but the basic fact is "it was a war" and therefore the term terrorist is wrong and as much as you may disagree with it the basic fact is that they were "freedom fighters" Sin E...
