  • @JonaVicis because it only expands at the point of freezing, but providing it is still a liquid, it will expand as it becomes warmer nearing the phase change to a gas and contract when cooled as long as it doesnt reach freezing point.

  • air under the molding clay increases in temperature making it's volume increase forcing water in the bottle to move up through the straw while in the hot water. and vice versa if it were placed in the cold water
