I'll show you the kind of stuff I buy at the supermarkets here in Japan. Learn about the products we buy here in Japan and see what they look like. Since I mostly shop at supermarkets and grocery stores I'll be showing you the food products I buy from those places. There are also traditional food markets here in Japan as well. I don't shop at those places as often, but if I do buy stuff from the traditional markets I will show that as well. Basically, since I have lived here in Kobe for a long time I know where to buy the cheapest of any product I want. Food is expensive here in Japan so knowing where to get what you want for a good price is imperative to saving money here in Japan. Today I bought dried noodles, milk, bananas, canned kidney beans and canned diced tomatoes.

Transcript:
Alright I just went shopping tonight and I go shopping every night and I pick up a few items. And if you're, you know, curious about Japan or you want to live in Japan I think you're going to want to know what the food products look like.

Alright, I picked up some dry noodles and this says zaru udon. These are like thick noodles you can see they're kind of fat. I picked these up for about 250 yen, which is like 2 dollars and 70 cents in US currency and it's 800 grams.

I got some bananas. So almost all of the bananas that I buy here are imported from the Philippines. And one interesting thing about buying bananas here in Japan is that they always wrap the bananas in plastic. And I think they do that for two reasons. One is to keep the bananas, and the other, the more important reason, is to prevent people from taking bananas off of the bunch. Okay, that's two bunches there.

I picked up some milk, and here in Japan almost all of the milk is sold in a 1000 milliliter quantity. 1000 milliliters is equivalent to 1 liter. One gallan has about 3.7 milliliters. I paid about 156 yen for this which is on the cheap end here in Japan and that's about, I'd say a dollar and 70 cents. So, you know, if you calculate that out to the gallon it comes out to around 6 dollars a gallon. So milk is pretty expensive here. And then when I buy milk I always like to check the fat content because I like high fat milk. And this says here "nyu shibo bun" which means milk fat. And this says 3.5 percent. And I have to tell you I just love the milk here. I mean I am a proud American, but I give Japan hands down the best milk I've ever tasted. It's so good, it's so rich. I just love the milk here. And I've drank milk in other countries like Thailand, Mexico and Europe but Japan's milk is the best.

And then I've got some kidney beans and these are a produce of Italy. You can't find canned beans like this at most supermarkets in Japan in 2011. I have to go to one chain store that's called Gyomu supermarket that sells canned beans like this and that's only, you know, in the past year I think that they started selling canned beans like this and I am just so happy because I make more western style dishes with canned beans. And those beans cost about 56 yen or about 70 cents in US currency.

And then I just got some diced tomatos here and these are also from Italy. These have basil added to them. But if you get just a regular can of diced tomatos without the basil it'll cost about . . . Well, if you buy it at a cheap supermarket I would pay about 60 yen which is like, I don't know, about 70 cents in US currency. So, that's just some of the things I picked up and this is what they look like.
