As others have pointed out, this has nothing to do with ego. Captain really wasn't having fun here either. Most yachts are extremely safe out in the open sea (away from rocks and sands), and provide good (albeit uncomfortable) shelter. They can handle much more than their crews. After 36 hrs of storm, the crew is exhausted, the yacht is not.
So you step UP into a life raft, never down (except in case of fire), and the same goes for rescue ops. While possible, staying on is safest.

The sailing vessel was a Westsail 32; a really good ocean going boat. I would have hated to leave here also. By her riding the storm out and not sinking, the owner was correct in not wanting to leave her.

I agree completely with you. Owners of plastic boats usually don't know their boats. They have no relation and understanding as how their boats are built or how they behave in severe conditions. They invest in gimicks, yet forget to check their seacocks or replace them once in a while. A bluewater boat owner learns thru experience, one bad day after another, and enjoys his mastering of situatiuons, while a plastik boat owner sits in a marina, drinks bier and shouts what to do in this or that sit

All are wright and some are wrong. I would not have left my seaworthy sailboat too, unless, as here, when ordered by the CG. Badmouthing the CG is very disrespectful. Those boys and girls take rescue serious. Personally I don't like American behavior on sea, as I experienced too much 'John Wayne' attitude when sailing the san juan islands. But neverthless, when in trouble I hail them all, no matter what. I would have deployed a sea/anchor if nothing goes no more, sit on the floor with a bucket.

the problem with this vessel is that it is a 32 foot sailing monohull which is unstable in such conditions. Captain is likely sick, tired and unable to function anymore. Catamarans are much safer.

Captain may have stayed aboard for insurance purposes. He probably wanted the coast guard to force him off so he could remove himself from having any liability in leaving a sound vessel in the water. No he probably has a bullet proof insurance claim "coast guard forced me off by boat".

After losing it's life raft, life jackets, and extra fuel, especially when running out of daylight, the CG had every right to declare it unsafe or in danger. Although the vessel itself could probably handle it, what if they could no longer stay ahead of the water they were taking on and had no life raft,,,,, then everyone would be bitching "why didn't the CG do something". No win situation. I'm sure the boat was well insured.

This is correct. If you read the actual story you'll see that the captain was forced to abandon his vessel due to the other crew members fearfully calling in a mayday without his permission. During the rescue, he dropped a hipsack pouch on the deck on accident. When they recovered the boat several days later, it was still in the same spot on deck, proving the boat was not in any danger from those waves.

This is not the way I know the story. I also miss the picture of the Satory safe an sound on the beach. The captain was forced...more of the story to find in the Westsail community.

Typical boy scout behaviour. The boat was sound- the skipper was correct. I hope the coast guard were prepared to pay for any damage to his "seaworthy" vessel.
