Simple demonstration of the medieval viol I just completed, based on a 12th Cent. German Bible illustration. The fiddle is tuned G'DG (with high string the same pitch as the low string of a violin). I'm not a gamba player (I play mostly on the arm), so please pardon my technique. For more information on this instrument and its construction, see http://crab.rutgers.edu/~pbutler/voil/viol.html.

  • Very nice! Thank you for posting this. Your site first inspired me to attempt making first a pochette, and then a rebec, and even though both are very much beginners efforts, the bug has bitten! Seeing the actual instrument handled and played adds so much to the understanding of it! I look forward to more!
