QUESTIONER: "Do you favor . . . shifting of taxation from work to taxation of consumption?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "Yes, sir. Here's what I'd like to do. I have to give you straight talk again. Because of the influence of special interests in America, we not only don't simplify the tax code, we make it more complicated . . . what we need in my view is to have Americans given a choice. A choice of a simplified tax system that has, say, two tax brackets, generous deductions, including for children and that's it, and a flat tax [applause] of say, let's just say, for example, $100,000, you get about $27k in deductions and you pay a flat 15% rate. Above $100,000 or so, you pay a 25% rate . . . "
