The tree is a metaphor to the religion "implanting" itself on generation to generation, manipulating, and in the end he smashes the tree with the hammer(logic, reason, whathever you wanna call), dropping the people, the young ones go first, but the old ones stays, because religion is so deep in their head, that they can't get rid of it.

i first heard this song at a Christian "rock music evil" thing. this once one of the videos they showed of what NOT to listen to. I immediately loved this song and bought the album.
