Both lice and scabies are extremely contagious, especially for children in school. Lice are tiny insects that feed on blood, while scabies is a skin rash caused by a tiny parasitic mite. In order to prevent lice and scabies, avoid close skin-to-skin contact with anyone who is infected. Also, don't share personal items like clothing, hats, hair accessories and towels. Avoid places like beds and couches that have been in contact with someone that was infected.
Notify your child's school or day care should they get lice or scabies because classmates are likely to get infected. The most common treatment for lice is an over-the-counter or prescription cream, lotion, or shampoo. Scabies is generally cured with prescription creams, lotions, or pills.
