Don first hit with "Thinking Of You" in 1951 and his biggest hit came in 1955 with "Band Of Gold", but for a man who played golf so well that as an amateur he placed in the Top Five of a U.S. Open in 1960 and was also the voice of "Mr. Clean" on television for years, he was a "rare" individual indeed. The song "So Rare" represented the "last gasp" of the Big Band Era on this nation's hit parade for Jimmy Dorsey in 1957 and a great tune for Don Cherry shortly thereafter.
@RayBushfox I like them both. Jerry, however, took voice lessons whereas Cherry, apparently, never did. Perhaps because of this Jerry did a fair number of semi-operatic songs whereas Don generally stuck to the simpler stuff. It would have been interesting to have heard Cherry do more range-stretching material because I certainly think he had the vocal chops for it.

Best vocal version of this song that I've heard. Cherry had about as pure a voice as any male pop singer of his era.

Great music, I think Don Cherry and Jerry Vale both came from the same mould.
I'm looking for Don Cherry's version of 'For You'.
