From AllMusic:
In 1992, Zoo Entertainment seemed to envision the Voices as a female equivalent of the Jackson 5, the Boys, or early New Edition. Though their debut album Just the Beginning wasn't a big hit, it proved that the preteen quartet had some potential. LaToya McMoore and sister LaPetra McMoore, Monique Wilson, and Arike Rice — collectively the Voices — are capable singers, and while parts of the CD are too cutesy for their own good, much of the material is decent. "Cloudy With a Chance of Tears," which Alex Brown co-wrote, has a Jimmy Jam/Terri Lewis feel, and "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" and "M.M.D.R.N.F. (My Mama Didn't Raise No Fool)" are the type of hip-hop-influenced urban contemporary tunes that would have worked well on one of New Edition's early albums. Equally noteworthy is the Voices' hip-hop remake of the Jackson 5's "The Love You Save." Enjoyable, if uneven, Just the Beginning indicated that the Voices were worth keeping an eye on. Surprisingly, however, it would be the L.A. group's only CD.
