This is such a crap example of functionalism. I have used this in classes (it's from the Applied Sociology text I use) and students end up confused and unsure of how to apply Functionalism to analyze and solve other problems.
It would be much better to explain how it works as a theory, and give some examples of it and how to use it to analyse social institutions, values etc., and THEN talk about some of the ways that it can be applied to real world situations.
