I want to thank the men and women of the 87th General Assembly for their service and dedication to Arkansas and congratulate them on a productive legislative session.
In January's State of the State Address, I challenged our legislators to rise above the nation's current economic struggles and find ways to continue Arkansas's progress. I believe that, together, we have responded to that challenge.
Further tax reductions on groceries, a comprehensive health-care package, increased funding for public education, millions of dollars for new college scholarships, and a continued commitment to economic development are accomplishments in which we can all take great pride. This is quite an achievement, particularly at a time when other states are slashing budgets and raising taxes to respond to an unprecedented, worldwide financial crisis.
Arkansas is not immune to the recession's impact, but by working together, we have done our part to secure a stronger future and provide a better life for all of her people.
