i looked it up and it not only ended his career but also nearly his life!
theres a report on the events immediately after indicating that if he had stayed on the ice to break up the fights he likely would've died right there and then due to: total loss of his nose and several face and jaw injuries!!

Only one problem with your theory: How do you suppose that the referees will blow the whistle if they are wearing a full face shield?
A half visor makes sense though, and would've helped DePuzzo in this case!
