Actually, in the original novel, the Wilkeses were all thought of as sort of weird because, among other things, they married their cousins. There was a conversation between Gerald and one of the neighbors early in the book about how it was weakening the Wilkes' bloodline and making them unhealthy.

I remember watching that dreadful film and thinking about this sketch throughout the whole experience.
